There were a couple of recent posts on foto_decadent that screamed dieselpunk (for those who don't know, dieselpunk encompasses the broad era of the jazz age all the way up to the Cold War, but usually centers on WWII, and where steampunk takes inspiration from sci-fi of it's era, like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, dieselpunk draws from pulp fiction), and I have to link them.

Steampunk Links of Interest!

Jun. 25th, 2010 | 11:25 pm

Some clicky-links for you to be clickying.

Steampunk Magazine
is awesome, and all their issues are available as free pdfs! I maintain that their latest (7th) issue should be required reading for ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE.

The Gatehouse Gazette is another keen online magazine, and as a plus, it also has dieselpunk!

Katafalk
has ridiculously fabulous tutorials for sewing a bunch of rad stuff, including corsets.

This article
explains why you can't be Victorian and a classic Caribbean-style pirate at the same time, unless you bend some serious history all over the place like whoa.

These photos are bloody amazing and everyone should go stare at the pretty right now, seriously.

This
explains why steampunk shouldn't just be sepia.

If you haven't read the comic Girl Genius yet you're missing out on some serious awesome.

The Met has a huge huge huge (yeah, it's that huge) awesome historical clothing archive. Allow me to commit the sin of covetousness.

Kate Awesome Beaton draws a crazy awesome webcomic of awesome awesome. About history. Awesome history.

Today's Ramble -- On the Wearing of Shoes

Jun. 25th, 2010 | 11:06 pm

For as much of my young childhood as I can remember I abhorred wearing shoes and socks. I wandered about barefoot in the chill of midwinter, and would "forget" my shoes in the car in an effort to go into the supermarket unshod. The only shoes I would usually stoop to wear were flip-flops, a single pair of which I would wear for years on end, until I finally wore a hole in the middle of each sole.
Not to mention, I have never liked lotion much, so there was nothing to be done for the thick callouses on the bottoms of my feet. I happily ignored them, and would hair only grow on the tops, I would have the feet of a hobbit.
Around the age of 11 I did a perfect 180' on socks, beginning a love affair with socks of all sorts that causes me to trawl sockdreams.com in the dead of night nearly every day, but the shoe situation shows little sign of changing much. I must be plied with chocolate, or possibly cuddles if I like you very much*, to wear anything other than my beloved flipflops in summer and my beloved wingtips in winter.

* and thus is how my present crush got me to wear three-inch heeled boots to her sister's graduation. Sigh.

Just in case anyone was angry for me for being so gender-unliberated in my last icon post... trust me, I'm not.
Or, you know, don't trust me and look at these pretty icons instead.

Because I've barely ever posted to this journal....

Sep. 30th, 2009 | 09:00 pm
mood: calmcalm

V I T A L   S T A T I S T I C S:
I'm Sorcha. I'm an actor and student. I like pretty things and I'm something of an aestheticist/dandy/fop. I also like steampunk.
I write. I've participated in NaNoWriMo three times and I made it to the goal of 50,000 words for the first time last year. I plan to participate again this year. You can read about my writing exploits in my other journal, <lj user="flavour-of-nano"> (although be warned that, due to lack of sleep and bounty of caffeine during their writing, posts in said journal tend to be badly punctuated and rambling, at best).
I'm a bit of a linguistics nerd, although not much of a polyglot - yet. I'm fluent in English, conversational in German, and I'm currently actively working on learning Irish Gaelic and Mandarin Chinese. I'm fond of Middle English, and by extension I love Chaucer.
I love object manipulation. I'm learning juggling, contact juggling, and poi -- although I'm far from good at any of the above. I also nurse a desire to learn diabolo, although I have yet to find anyone willing to teach me.

P O I N T L E S S   N O N S E N S E:
I have ovaries and XX chromosomes, and from that you can likely determine my sex, but my gender* is a mass of neurons bound together with emotions and lambswool yarn, and you'd best back away slowly if it starts to pulse and glow. Oh, dear, you'd better back away slowly in any case.
I'm attracted to women, regardless of what's in their jeans or their genes. At the moment my word for this is 'panlesbian', but I'm having trouble labelling it. My sexuality is not nearly as rabid and uncontrollable as my gender, but it's frightened of strangers so don't get to close unless I say it likes you.
Vision is 20/20, teeth are crooked. Subject has full set of teeth. Hair is dark and quite short, as subject claims it 'gets in the way'.

*Current preffered pronouns, if anyone cares to know, are the Spivak pronouns: ey em eir eirs emself. If you use 'xe' or 'hir' I will purse my lips and narrow my eyes.
